SW News: The latest report on American schools shows that charter schools outperform their public counterparts. A new survey from a group of researchers who have studied the evolution of charters since 2009 says that the students show more significant academic gains than their peers in traditional public schools.
The non-partisan, political study from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University released its third study earlier in June. For this, the group compared student performance in 6,200 charter schools.
In the earlier study published by the group, public district schools were shown to perform better than charter schools. However, in the study from 2014 to 2019 using data from 29 states, New York City, and the District of Columbia, 83% of charter school students performed the same as or better than their classmates in reading, and 75% did the same as or better in Maths.
Dr. Macke Raymond, an author of the report, said, "Students who are enrolled in charter schools get more learning in a year's time in both reading and mathematics than they would have gotten had they gone to their local district schools."
From 2014 to 2019, charters gained, on average, the equivalent of 16 days of learning in reading and six days in math over their peers in traditional public schools. According to the survey, network charter schools, also known as charter management organizations that oversee several schools, performed even better, giving their pupils an additional 27 days of reading and 23 days of Maths.
