California:

In the American state of California, a group of Christian parents has filed a lawsuit against a charter school policy that prevents the inclusion of religious materials in programs meant for homeschooling.
Parents who are part of the independent study programs conducted by Blue Ridge Academy and Visions in Education charter schools are demanding the inclusion of Christian content in the coursework. They filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California last Wednesday voicing their argument.
In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs said, “These schools discriminate against parents who seek to educate their children in accordance with their faith, even if that faith-based education fully satisfies state educational standards.”
They alleged that the schools have curbed the parents' use of funds to buy curricula and other study materials based on religion. The parents said the schools refused to accept or award credit for work samples of children based on faith-based content or which reflect religious perspectives.
Among the defendants of the lawsuit are Tony Thurmond, Superintendent of Public Instruction; Michael Coleman, superintendent of Maricopa Unified School District; board members of the Maricopa USD; Melissa Bassanelli, superintendent of San Juan Unified School District; board members of the San Juan USD; officials at Blue Ridge Academy and officials at Visions in Education
Representing the parents are Plano-based conservative legal group First Liberty Institute with the support of law firm King & Spalding LLP in Atlanta.
