SW News: The Holy Father Pope Francis sent a congratulatory note to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who is marking the 30th anniversary of his election as the Archbishop of Constantinople. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I is the spiritual head of the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is known for tackling issues related to religious freedom, human rights, and ecology. Many call him the “The Green Patriarch”.
In his congratulatory letter to Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Francis wrote, “I join you in thanksgiving to the Lord for the many blessings bestowed upon your life and ministry over these years,” said the Pope, “and pray that God, from whom all gifts come, will grant you health, spiritual joy and abundant grace to sustain every aspect of your lofty service.”
The Pontiff shares a personal bond with the Patriarch and has met him on many occasions. The last meeting took place earlier this month. In the letter, the Holy Father recollected Patriarch Bartholomew’s presence at his installation ceremony in 2013. “As clearly reflected once again by your participation in events recently held in Rome,” added the Pope, “I share with you the understanding of our common pastoral responsibility in the face of the urgent challenges confronting the entire human family today.” said the Holy Father.
The Pontiff also pledged his support in Bartholomew’s commitment to protecting Creation and taking up the cause for humanity’s spiritual renewal. Pope Francis said, “With the outbreak of the pandemic and the ensuing grave health, social and economic repercussions, your testimony and teaching on the need for the spiritual conversion of humanity have acquired enduring relevance.”
The pontiff thanked the Ecumenical Patriarch for choosing the path of dialogue to promote the unity between both the Churches. Concluding the letter, the Holy Father expressed his deep affection and spiritual closeness to the Patriarch.
Bartholomew I was elected the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople of the Eastern Orthodox Church on October 22, 1991. On November 2, 1991, he was installed as the 270th successor of the Apostle Andrew.
