SW News: The United Nations Postal Administration has issued a definitive stamp in honor of St Teresa of Calcutta popularly known as Mother Teresa ahead of her 24th death anniversary. Released on August 12, the stamp features an engraved-style portrait of the saint and her quote, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love”.

The $1.80 stamp will be used from the UN post office at the UN headquarters in New York City. The stamp was created by Artist Martin Mörck from Norway and designer Rorie Katz (United Nations).

Mother Teresa, founder of the Missionaries of Charity, was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, to Albanian parents on August 26, 1910. Young Teresa discerned her vocation at the age of 12 and joined the Sisters of Loreto at Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Ireland. Mother reached India in 1929 and took her solemn vows on May 14, 1937.

While serving as a teacher at the Loreto convent school in Entally, eastern Calcutta, she was moved by the plight of the sick and the poor. She felt her calling was to serve the poor and she decided to leave the convent. In 1950, Mother founded the Missionaries of Charity, now spread across 139 countries around the globe. For over 45 years, Mother took care of the abandoned, poor, sick, and homeless. Mother’s passion for Jesus and her commitment to serve mankind touched the heart of the world.

“For work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace,” Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa was called to heaven on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87. She was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016.
