4 abducted Catholic nuns in Nigeria’s Imo state freed

SW News: In Nigeria, the four Catholic sisters who were abducted by unidentified gunmen from Imo state were released on Tuesday. It was on Sunday that Sisters Johannes Nwodo, Christabel Echemazu, Liberata Mbamalu, and Benita Agu were abducted from the Okigwe-Umulolo axis in the Okigwe local government area. They were on their way to a thanksgiving mass of one of their colleagues.
In a statement, the Secretary-General of Sisters Of Jesus The Savior (Generalate), Zita Ihedoro said the reverend sisters were released “unconditionally”. She said: “With hearts full of joy the sisters of Jesus the Savior wish to announce the unconditional and safe release of four of our sisters.”
“Today is a memorable day for us, therefore, we wish to share this joy with all men and women of goodwill who in one way or the other contributed to the quick and safe release of our dear sisters. We sincerely appreciate and thank you for your prayers and moral support during this difficult moment. May Jesus protect and provide for you, especially in times of difficulty.”
Local press reports say there have been many abductions and attempted kidnappings recently in this location on the highway, which is not far from a military checkpoint. Police in the region have accused soldiers of being involved in a kidnapping ring.
The route has become notorious for high-profile abduction. Earlier this year, the Primate of the Methodist Church, Samuel Kanu, alongside other travellers, was abducted on the same route. Catholic priest Fr Chinedu Nwadike was also kidnapped and was in captivity for two days.
A resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: “Despite several army checkpoints mounted around our community, kidnapping has become a weekly occurrence, if not daily.”
Kidnappings for ransom by armed bandits are on the rise in other states of Nigeria as well. Many a time, Christians and clergy are the victims of abduction by these gangs who rule the roost.
