Archbishop Listecki re-introduces obligation to attend Sunday Mass
News Desk
Wednesday, 16 Sep 2020
SW News: The Archdiocese of Milwaukee in the U.S. State of Wisconsin has become one of the first dioceses in the United States to re-introduce the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. That ends a six-month lifting of the obligation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Explaining his decision on the diocesan website, Archbishop Jerome Listecki of Milwaukee said that those faithful who can attend Sunday Mass should now attend Sunday Mass and that not to do so is a mortal sin. He reminded people, though, that those who have good reason not to attend Sunday Mass are still dispensed from their obligation. This includes those who are infirm, sick or are at high-risk of contracting COVID-19. A general fear of getting sick, however, does not excuse someone from attending Sunday Mass, says Archbishop Listecki, describing the obligation to attend as a joyful one that, “is a witness to God as the priority in our lives.”
