SW News: For two weeks at a stretch, the faith-based movie “His Only Son” is slated to climb to the top tier at the weekend box office. It clinched an ‘A’ CinemaScore audience rating as well as 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Angel Studios’ first theatrical release, “His Only Son” was made with a budget of 250,000 USD and present estimates show that it was in sixth position in the cumulative box office, fetching 11,044,046 USD during the Easter weekend. Angel Studios is the streaming platform behind “The Chosen”, the most successful crowd-funded faith movie venture.
Released in theaters on March 31, the movie is credited to be biblically accurate as it narrates the episode where Abraham is told by God to sacrifice his firstborn Isaac. It is one of the most poignant moments in the Old Testament. The movie is all about the account of Abraham, whose role is essayed by Nicolas Mouadwad, his son and two servants as they travel to Mount Moriah for the sacrifice.
During the journey, the party faces several travails and Abraham recollects the long wait for a child with his wife Sarah, whose role is played by Sara Sayed. Now, the gift they received has to be sacrificed on the altar. The movie revolves around the centuries-old question as to why the Lord demanded such a sacrifice. It also urges viewers to ask themselves whether they will have faith if they are asked to give up everything.
According to CBN News, the movie was the first flick to resort to crowdfunding to raise marketing funds to pay for distribution and advertising costs. There was a positive response from tens of thousands of investors to pay for Printing and Advertising costs.
CBN News quoted Jared Geesey, senior vice-president of Global Distribution at Angel Studios, as saying, “His Only Son is the ‘little indie that could’—a film made on a tiny budget by a director who went to film school on the GI Bill based on a story people have wrestled with for untold centuries. Our investors believed in the project and crowdfunded the P&A so the word could get out. This film was up against big studio films with serious marketing budgets, and yet, this film continues to turn in incredible numbers.”
