They aim to provide globally faith-based and values-based entertainment while creating a brand that audiences can call theirs
Los Angeles:
Jesus Revolution producer Jon Erwin and former YouTube and Netflix executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten have raised $75 million to launch a studio called Wonder Project. Their goal is to produce faith-based films and television shows rooted in the Christian tradition. Dallas Jenkins, producer and director of the hit series "The Chosen," will serve as a special advisor and shareholder and produce content for the project.
Lions Gate producer Jason Blum, United Talent Agency, Sovereign's Capital, and Powerhouse Capital are among the notables who have contributed more than $75 million in seed rounds and Series A funds raised to date. With headquarters in Los Angeles and Austin, Texas, Hoogstraten said Project WONDER seeks to bring hope to the world and tell stories that restore hope in the things worth believing in, like family, community, God, and America.
They aim to provide globally faith-based and values-based entertainment while creating a brand that audiences can call theirs. The company seeks to sell its products to mainstream networks, streamers, and film distributors while creating its own streaming and distribution options.
"We want to partner with studios, streamers, and anyone else who wants to reach this audience in entirely new ways. But we want to do that by building something independent and long-lasting. Considering Jesus Revolution grossed a record $52 million at the box office, Erwin said that major Hollywood studios realize the audience is vast and underserved. They also realize an inherent gap exists between their knowledge of the content and their knowledge of that audience. They need to learn how to seize this opportunity. We will build a bridge between these two worlds," Erwin continued.
Powerhouse Capital's Managing Partner Ian Doody said that the WONDER Project is ‘tapping into a massive, global need. The faith and values audience is global, and the quality shows being developed will meet the long-standing and growing demand’. To begin with, the WONDER Project has roughly 12 writers working on creating scripts. The team is searching for other like-minded creators to help produce more faith-based content.
