SW News: In the US state of Indiana, the House Education Committee voted 9-4 to approve a bill that mandates teachers to inform parents if a child changes their gender identity or preferred name. On Monday, House Bill 1608, which prohibits students from kindergarten through Grade III from being taught sexual orientation and gender identity, underwent modifications during a hearing before the Committee. After the vote, it was sent to the House floor.

While it was being discussed in the Committee, its author Michelle Davis of the Grand Old Party made certain changes so that it prohibited the teaching of human sexuality from kindergarten through Grade III and it also removed all mentions of sexual orientation and gender identity. Those who support the legislation uphold the importance it gives to parents when it comes to discussing sensitive topics with children.

According to Davis, “The goal of House Bill 1608 is to empower Hoosier parents by reinforcing that they’re in the driver’s seat when it comes to introducing sensitive topics to their children.”

The Indiana Family Association, which supports the traditional family and its values, has expressed support for the legislation. "If a student questions their gender identity to a teacher, the best answer is, you can talk to your parents,” said Micah Clark, executive director of the outfit.

“A teacher should never be forced to abandon their beliefs about the meaning of male or female just to keep their jobs,” said Matt Sharp of the Alliance Defending Freedom.

Member Jake Teshka proposed another amendment wherein parents have to be notified if a student requested a school staff member to change his or her name or pronouns. Although it was passed along party lines, it faced stiff opposition from certain quarters. Critics said the legislation was opposed to LGBTQ and sent the wrong signals to students.
