SW News: A judge in the American state of Iowa has temporarily blocked the newly passed fetal heartbeat law. It was on Monday that Judge Joseph Seidlin issued an injunction on the law which was signed by Governor Kim Reynolds.

As per the law, almost all termination of pregnancies is prohibited once a heartbeat is detected in the unborn child around the sixth week of gestation. With the injunction on the new law, women can undergo an abortion in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnan that was signed by the governor.

On the other hand, Reynolds has vowed to take up the matter with the State Supreme Court. "The abortion industry's attempt to thwart the will of Iowans and the voices of their elected representatives continues today," said the governor.
Even though the injunction on the new law is in place, the Board of Medicine of the state should go ahead and create rules to enforce it, says the ruling. In this manner, proper guidelines will be in place for healthcare providers if the law were to come into effect in the future.

As per the new law, abortion is permitted only in cases of rape if the law enforcement or a health provider is informed about it within 45 days. It also permits the termination of pregnancy in the case of incest provided it is informed within 145 days. If the unborn child has an abnormality incompatible with life or if it puts the life of the woman in jeopardy, then also abortion can be sought in Iowa.
