Iowa Supreme Court allows gov. to appeal temporary ban on anti-abortion law

SW News: The Supreme Court in USA’s Iowa has ruled that the governor can go ahead with an appeal on a temporary block on the new anti-abortion law passed by the state. It was last week that Gov. Kim Reynolds said she would appeal the injunction and lawyers representing the state filed the request in court on Friday.
On July 11, the Legislature of Iowa controlled by the members of the Grand Old Party approved the anti-abortion bill that bans the termination of pregnancy after the sixth week when a fetal heartbeat is detected. It came into effect days after the governor signed it.
However, pro-choice groups such as Planned Parenthood North Central States, ACLU of Iowa and the Emma Goldman Clinic filed a lawsuit and Judge Joseph Seidlin permited their request to issue an injunction as the constitutionality of the law was examined in court.
So as long as the temporary ban on the law remains, abortion will be allowed in the state until the 20th week of pregnancy. Governor Reynolds wants the top court of Iowa to override the verdict of the lower court and permit the law to go into effect.
It remains unclear if all the justices will also consider the appeal. The recusal of a justice paved the way for a unique 3-3 decision in June which made the ban on a similar 2018 law permanent. This made the governor convene a special session to debate the new bill.
