SW News: Kentucky joined nine other US states to implement bans on puberty-blocking drugs and gender-changing surgeries for children after the lawmakers overturned a veto by the governor. The Democratic Governor Andy Beshear earlier vetoed SB 150, which would prohibit those under 18 from obtaining gender therapies and sex-reassignment surgeries.

Opposing the legislation, the governor had stated that improving "access to gender-affirming care is an important means of improving health outcomes for the transgender population," that the law "strips freedom from parents to make personal family decisions," and that "Senate Bill 150 will cause an increase in suicide among Kentucky's youth."

However, Beshear's veto was overridden by the Senate to 29-8, and shortly; the House passed a resolution to complete the override with a vote of 76-23 and enacted the bill into law.

Under the law, doctors need to halt services for patients already undergoing treatment unless a sudden end to care will harm the patient. In addition, the law requires doctors to establish a timeline to end the treatment in such cases. The restrictions will come into force in three months.

The legislation will also bar schools from holding discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity and restrict bathroom use by biological sex.

Various organizations supporting bans on puberty-blocking drugs welcomed the legislation. Meanwhile, the opponents decried the same. Soon after the bill was passed, a large group of people protested over the same. Police officials said they had to charge at least 19 people with trespassing.

Earlier this month, Kentucky lawmakers passed SB 150 earlier this month, which prohibits the prescription of puberty blockers, chemical castration, physical castration, and other procedures on children from making them seem more like the opposite sex.

At least ten states have passed legislation addressing transgender persons, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Tennessee, and Utah.

A law prohibiting transgender medical treatment for minors was signed into law by the governor of West Virginia on the same day that Kentucky's veto was overturned.
