New York Christian organization fires employees for using pronouns in email signatures

SW News: Two employees of a Christian organization in New York have been dismissed for using pronouns in their email signatures, according to videos and blogs posted by the former employees.
Shua Wilmot and Raegan Zelaya, both dormitory administrators at New York's Houghton University, were fired within an hour of each other in April for using pronouns in their email signatures and refusing to delete them. According to Christian Post, the school issued them both letters instructing them to stop using the pronouns with which they identified and to delete the signatures from their emails since they were in violation of school guidelines. Wilmot used he/him pronouns, while Zelaya used she/her.
Wilmot threatened to send an open letter to the General Superintendent of the Wesleyan Church denouncing the church's gender teachings, according to the university, while Zelaya made negative statements about the institution's diversity efforts.
According to reports, Zelaya changed the typography, color, and height of her email signature to fit the university's rules, as well as added a link to her pronouns so that people could schedule appointments with her.
Meanwhile, the group claimed in a statement posted on Monday that no employee had ever been fired because of the pronouns they used in their email signatures. For some years, the school has requested that all punctuation marks, special characters, and Bible verses be removed from email addresses. "Houghton is dedicated to providing our children with the Christian education we promised them,” said the group.
According to former workers, the institution issued an email to all employees outlining the needed signature style for marketing reasons, which prohibited biblical quotes, links, and odd typefaces and compelled staff to follow the university's color palette.
Wilmot and Zelaya, on the other hand, have gender-neutral names, which is one of the numerous reasons they provided for including pronouns in their email signatures.
