Parents flay Ohio's constitutional amendment allowing abortion for minors without parental consent

SW News: As the US state of Ohio advances the amendment of the state constitution, which includes the legalization of abortion, the parents are concerned that the proposed change would undermine parental rights. In addition, they raised concerns over the permission of minors to have abortions and undergo gender transformations without their consent or notification.
The proposed amendment, titled "The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety," states that everyone has the right to make and carry out their own reproductive decisions, "including but not limited to" contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one's pregnancy, miscarriage care, and abortion. However, parents are complaining about the amendment's "loosely defined" language, which prohibits any rule that "directly or indirectly" "interferes" with "reproductive decisions," arguing that they would be left out if their child opts to have an abortion or sex change operation.
The amendment's language was submitted for consideration by a coalition of pro-choice organizations and was accepted in March. To appear on the November 2023 ballot, advocates of this amendment now have time until July 5 to collect over 400,000 signatures from Ohio voters.
Although the coalition is operating under the idea that the amendment will be on the ballot, Protect Women Ohio, which is leading the opposition to the amendment, claimed that there is no publicly available information on the status of the signatures.
After the reversal of Roe v Wade the Buckeye State restricted abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, but the restriction was overturned by a court reinstating abortions up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. If the amendment passes, it is unknown how it will affect Ohio's abortion legislation regarding minors.
