SW News: House Republicans plan to use the annual defence policy law National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) to overturn the Biden administration's "woke" policies on gender, abortion, diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI).

Last week, Republican lawmakers submitted a large number of amendments that they hope would be incorporated into the NDAA for 2024 that the House Armed Services Committee approved in June. The bill has received more than 1,300 modifications, which could be debated as soon as next week when House Republicans reconvene.

The plan already contains a number of "anti-woke" clauses, such as one from Republican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana that forbids the Pentagon from recruiting senior DEI employees.

The Republicans passed many amendments slashing DEI bureaucrats, banning race and gender quotas in military recruiting and promotions, reinstating unvaccinated service members fired by the Biden administration, and shutting down the Navy’s drag queen digital ambassador program. They also passed provisions to defund critical race theory courses at West Point and service academies, and end transvestite shows at military bases.

Republicans are wishing to do more before the bill gets a final vote on the House floor. Several amendments are aimed at blocking the Pentagon from providing sex-alignment surgeries or other related services to service members.
Reps. Mary Miller of Illinois and Matt Gaetz of Florida are among the politicians who want to outlaw gender transition surgery. Boebert and Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina has proposed a comparable amendment that would ban these surgeries in the care provided to military families.

Gaetz has two further ideas about the Department Of Defence's (DOD) gender-related guidelines. Both would forbid service members from using facilities that are not reserved for the gender indicated on the birth certificate of those service members and would forbid base reassignments that are connected to complaints that a state discriminates against people based on sexual orientation.
Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas introduced an amendment that would ban the DOD from reimbursing expenses incurred when service members travel to get an abortion.

Even if some of these amendments are approved by the House, it's possible that they won't be approved by the Senate. If each house approves a different version of the NDAA, negotiators from the House and Senate would meet to resolve their disagreements.
