SW News: In what is seen as a move that will be hailed by pro-life supporters, the Senate of the US state of Wisconsin passed a bill on Tuesday, September 28, mandating that doctors should save the life of a child that survives a botched abortion attempt.

The Republican-drafted bill says that any health care provider present at the time of an abortion that results in the baby being born alive must provide the same level of care given to any other child born normally. Violators would be charged with felony that invites a prison sentence of up to six years. If a baby surviving a failed abortion is intentionally left to die, then it invites life imprisonment, according to the bill.

While the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, Wisconsin Family Action, and Wisconsin Right to Life have all indicated their support for the bill, it has been opposed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault, as per the Wisconsin Ethics Commission records

Roger Roth, the bill's principal Senate sponsor, argued that everyone would want a kid to be born alive to receive health care and wondered how people could reject it. The bill was passed in the Senate with a 19-12 majority, with no Democrats voting for it. It will now proceed to the State Assembly.
