SW News: Across the USA, several states are passing legislation to ensure that biological males do not participate in girls’ sports citing gender dysphoria. On Tuesday, April 18, the state of North Carolina’s Senate advanced the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act that mandates athletes to be part of teams that correspond to their biological sex.

A similar bill is being debated in the North Carolina House to make sure that trans athletes are part of sports teams associated with their biological gender. A similar measure was introduced this month to prevent biological males from taking part in “interscholastic athletic activities designated for females, women or girls”.

As Republicans have an absolute majority in both chambers the bill is now veto-proof even if Democratic Governor Roy Cooper opposes them. North Carolina is now in the league of 21 states where there are restrictions in place on trans athletes in order to protect girls from biological males who identify themselves as female.

In the state of Alabama, the House of Representatives passed legislation on Tuesday that prohibits trans athletes from taking part in collegiate sporting events. "Forcing women to compete against biological men would reverse decades of progress women have made for equal opportunity in athletics," said Republican state Rep. Susan DuBose, who sponsored the bill, while addressing fellow lawmakers.

According to the bill, sports teams allocated for females, women or girls should not accommodate biological males. In a similar vein, biological females are not to be admitted in teams for boys and men. The bill is now slated to be passed in the Senate.

In the state of Missouri, the House passed a similar bill that bans transgender athletes from taking part in sports events based on the gender they identify with. It was passed in the Senate in March. While the House bill begins at Grade 6, its Senate version is applicable to all grades.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum signed into law last week a bill that bans transgender girls and women from enlisting in female sports teams in K-12 and university. Similarly, the Legislature in Kansas overrode Governor Laura Kelly’s veto to pass a bill that prohibits trans athletes from taking part in sports events for women and girls. Wyoming too has a new law that bans biological males from enrolling in a team meant for women and girls.
