SW News: This year’s first ‘Ice Mass’ was celebrated on the campus of Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, on February 10th at 5:30 PM EST. Several people also participated in the live stream of the Mass on Facebook. The chapel is made each year by the students and community members as part of the famous Winter Carnival.

Two Masses were held on 10th February and one on Saturday, 11th February.

The first Ice Mass took place in 2016 as a result of a ‘fun idea’ that a small group of students came up with, to build a chapel out of snow. The annual celebration of the Mass in the Ice Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows soon came to be known as “The Ice Mass”. Each year more students become part of the construction and more creative elements are added to the chapel. Fr.Ben Hasse and the priests of St. Albert the Great University Parish have always been supportive of the students.

The annual outdoor Mass brings together Catholic and non-Catholic communities.
