SW News: The disastrous Civil War in Yemen has resulted in the death of 10,000 children since March 2015. The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said that there haven't been official records of how many children died during the war. According to the UN agency, many of them are left unaccounted for.
The UNICEF issued a statement in which James Elder, the spokesman of the agency, said that roughly about four children are dying every day in Yemen. According to James, many of the cases are left unreported.
The UN statement said that the civil war has created the worst humanitarian crisis, economic crisis, lack of healthcare, malnutrition and lack of a proper education system in the Middle Eastern country. In the statement, UNICEF said, around 11 million children are in need of immediate attention. Another 400,000 children suffer from acute malnutrition.
The educational sector in the country is in crisis as more than two-thirds of teachers in the country haven't received their regular salary for over four years. In addition to that, the war has internally dispersed 1.7 million children, and another 15 million people have no access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene.
The civil war in Yemen was started by the Houthi rebels who took over the capital Sanaa. This prompted Saudi-led forces to intervene and oppose the Houthis. The US, the UK, and France helped the Saudi troops by providing them with logistical and intelligence support.
Ten of thousands of people have died, and millions more forced to flee for their lives as the war continues in the country. This year alone, UNICEF has helped 620,000 children gain access to education, vaccinations, safe drinking water, and other healthcare services.
