SW News:

The Holy Father Pope Francis has named a new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Sydney in Australia. Fr Danny Meaghe, the former rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary, has been named as the new auxiliary. His episcopal consecration will be held on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

The bishop-elect Fr. Meagher was born in West Wyalong in New South Wales and moved to Sydney with his parents when he was very young. He completed his studies at St Ignatius College Riverview and the University of Sydney. He studied economics and law and later worked in a law firm and that was when he received the call to serve the Lord.

He undertook his priestly studies at St Patrick’s College and was ordained a priest in July 1995. He pursued his licentiate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Apart from parish work, Fr. Meagher served as a vocation director, as well as the director of formation for those aspiring for the permanent diaconate. The priest was also the rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary for six years.

Fr. Meagher also dedicates his time ministering to the country's homeless, needy, and poor, especially in Surry Hills. The priest added, “I also got to know a lot of people living in the housing commission areas. I am attracted to that because I find that by being close to people on the margins, I come much closer to God. I hope to continue that as bishop.”

The bishop-elect also believes that he has a calling to help Catholics, especially students attending Catholic schools, to renew and strengthen their sacramental lives. Ever since the pandemic restrictions have been lifted, he has encouraged all faithful to return to Mass.
