Israel-Palestinian tensions rise after militants fire rockets from Lebanon

SW News: On Thursday, two rockets were fired from southern Lebanon toward Israel, triggering Israeli military operations across the border, according to sources on both sides. One of the rockets fell in Lebanese territory, while the other fell near a disputed area at their shared border.
"In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is currently striking the area from which the launch was carried out in Lebanese territory," a military statement said.
The incident occurred amid heightened Israeli-Arab tensions following Israel's heaviest military operation in decades this week in the occupied West Bank, directed at the Jenin camp, a hotbed of Palestinian Hamas militants. According to reports, the offensive claimed the lives of 12 Palestinians and destroyed or damaged 80% of the camp's homes. Meanwhile, Jenin residents have begun returning to the camp.
Lebanese National News Agency reported that some 15 shells fired from Israel had landed there. However, the initial reported rocket fire from Lebanon was not accompanied by a declaration of liability. The interim prime minister, Najib Mikati, said he was following up with the army chief of staff in Lebanon on the matter.
Sources in Lebanon claimed that the second rocket had landed close to the disputed village of Ghajar, which lies on the border between Israel and Lebanon but whose citizens declare allegiance to Syria.
During this week's Israeli operation on the West Bank of Jenin, Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese organization, proclaimed support for the Palestinian cause. This organization rules southern Lebanon and has engaged in battles with Israel. However, in response to the reports of missile fire, Hezbollah remained silent.
The tensions arose after the Israeli forces carried out their largest military assault in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin in more than 20 years on July 4. At least 10 people were killed, and about 100 others were injured. Reportedly, the IDF claimed to have started a major counterterrorism operation in the vicinity of Jenin Camp and the city of Jenin, targeting terrorist infrastructure.
