Gaza:
UN agency UNICEF expressed regret for the deaths and damage caused by the recent Israeli airstrike on the crowded Jabaliya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.
Described by Gaza hospital officials as "horrific and appalling," the second attack on the camp in 25 days of continuous bombing of the Strip resulted in at least 80 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The attacks are targeted at Hamas leaders, fighters, and infrastructure, said the Israel Defence Forces.
A UNICEF statement said the bombardments throughout the last three and a half weeks have reportedly resulted in more than 3,500 children killed and over 6,800 children injured. The statement that, throughout this period, more than 400 children would have died or been injured every day, and that "this cannot become the new normal."
UNICEF reminded everyone that parties to a conflict must respect and safeguard civilian populations taking refuge in refugee camps and internally displaced people's settlements.
"Attacks of this scale on densely populated residential neighborhoods can have indiscriminate effects and are completely unacceptable," according to a UNICEF statement. It emphasized even more that children should not be targets because "children have endured too much already" and "the killing and captivity of children must stop."
In summary, UNICEF's urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, to ensure the protection of all children, and for safe and unhindered humanitarian access to deliver lifesaving aid across the Gaza Strip, by international humanitarian law, was reiterated in the statement released on November 1.
The United Nations humanitarian organization UNICEF is in charge of giving children all over the world immediate humanitarian relief as well as developmental assistance.
