SW News: The Holy Father concluded his Apostolic Visit to Mongolia on Monday, September 4, by blessing the House of Mercy in Ulaanbaatar. During his visit to the facility that takes care of the abandoned children and the homeless, the Pope alluded to the words of Christ in the Gospel “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink”, saying that it is the criterion given by the Lord to recognize His presence in the world and for entering into the supreme joy of His kingdom.

He explained how the early Christian community stood on the pillars of communion, liturgy, service and witness. The pope said the spirit of charity has penetrated the small and vibrant community of believers in Mongolia adding that it is a testament to the enduring values of communion, prayer, selfless service and faith. The pontiff hailed the House of Mercy as a tangible expression of the Church’s care for others.

Pope Francis also acknowledged the various charitable initiatives that have originated from these roots and he expressed his gratitude saying “these projects continue to draw upon the dedication of missionaries from many countries who put their knowledge, experience, resources, and especially their love, at the service of Mongolian society."

He also exhorted volunteers to come forward and accept the ethos of selfless service. The pontiff said such activities are not meant for the wealthy but for people with modest resources who opt to spend their time and resources out of love for others. The pope also reminded the gathering that the Church’s commitment to social work and charity is not aimed at proselytization. "No! Christians do whatever they can to alleviate the suffering of the needy, because in the person of the poor, they acknowledge Jesus, the Son of God, and, in him, the dignity of each person, called to be a son or daughter of God."

Pope Francis also emphasized that charity should not be a money-making endeavor. He said it demands professionalism without turning into business. He recollected an anecdote from the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta who was an embodiment of true love by ministering to the sick out of love for Jesus rather than material benefits.

He thanked everyone involved in charitable works and extended his blessings to the staff and other associates of the House of Mercy. The pontiff also blessed the plaque of the house that was unveiled on the occasion. He also gifted its director a replica of the icon of Our Lady of Compassion believed to have been painted by St Luke the Evangelist.
