SW News:

Pope Francis praised Mongolia for preserving its roots and culture even while opening up to the challenges of development and modernity in recent decades. He was making his first speech in the landlocked Asian country on Saturday, September 2, while addressing members of civil society and the diplomatic corps. The event took place in the Ikh Mongol Hall in the State Palace of Ulaanbaatar.

During his address, the Holy Father heaped praise on the country for its initiatives to foster human rights and peace. He also made a special mention of how the country has remained free of nuclear arsenal and is committed to nuclear non-proliferation. Pope Francis also lauded the nation for the way in which it takes care of its rich and diverse landscape. He cited the symbol of the ger, the traditional Mongol tent used by nomads, while explaining the Mongolian commitment to nature. He appreciated the native wisdom handed over by generations of nomads and planters that was used by the people to appreciate and cultivate the Creation of God. This he said can combat “the effects of human devastation by a culture of care and foresight reflected in responsible ecological policies”.

The Holy Father also made a passionate appeal for peace in the world by saying, “May the dark clouds of war be dispelled, swept away by the firm desire for a universal fraternity wherein tensions are resolved through encounter and dialogue, and the fundamental rights of all people are guaranteed!”
He began his address by telling the dignitaries that he was at their door as a pilgrim of friendship, who comes quietly with a joyful heart and the desire to find himself enriched in their presence. He also recalled the efforts taken by the erstwhile pontiffs in the 13th century to establish diplomatic ties with Karakoram, which was the seat of the Great Khan Empire that encompassed present-day Mongolia.

The pontiff also mentioned how his visit coincided with the 860th birth anniversary of the much-revered Genghis Khan and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Mongolia after the fall of communism.

Before the address, he was warmly welcomed by Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsuk with whom he had exchanged gifts during a courtesy visit.
Pope Francis wound up his speech by remarking how the “small and discreet” Catholic community is making its own “human and spiritual contribution” to Mongolia. He said Mongolian Catholics are spreading “the culture of solidarity, universal respect and interreligious dialogue and by working for justice, peace and social harmony.”
