Cardinal de Mendonça urges Catholic varsities to embrace Artificial Intelligence with creativity

SW News: Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, highlighted the critical role that Catholic colleges play in embracing Artificial Intelligence during a scientific colloquium.
He was addressing an event entitled "Renewal and Awareness: Thinking about the Future of Catholic Universities," at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. It was organized by the Strategic Alliance of Catholic Research Universities.
The need for Catholic universities to be innovators and to embrace new trends was emphasized by Cardinal de Mendonça. He emphasized the value of discourse, addressing current issues, and encouraging ongoing renewal based on awareness. He stressed the crucial part these institutions play in determining the future by referring to pertinent Church scriptures.
The top Vatican official also urged colleges to bravely embrace AI and digital technologies while taking ethical considerations into account, drawing on Pope Francis' statements on AI. The cardinal stressed the importance of putting the welfare of the individual first and supporting moral standards.
The prelate highlighted the significance of a comprehensive strategy that puts the human being at the center of discussion when discussing the anthropological implications of AI. He promoted making investments in people's development, fostering their capacity for thought, creativity, spirituality, and morality. He also emphasized the significance of universities participating in society and encouraging interactions between various cultures. The key characteristics were determined to be a judgment based on sound principles and creative intellect.
Using the term "algor-ethics" established by Pope Francis, Cardinal de Mendonça emphasized the duty of Catholic universities to implement AI. In order to assure ethical concerns in the development and application of AI, he proposed social institutions. The colloquium also looked at the opportunities and problems associated with applying AI to various professions. Opportunities for cooperation and inclusivity were emphasized, particularly with regard to improving training for people with disabilities.
Concerns regarding the speed of technological development were expressed, highlighting the necessity of fairness, confidentiality, and data verification. Participants did believe that AI has the ability to create new vocations and support sustainable civilizations.
