Christian Democrats for Life leader urges German government to tackle surge in abortion cases

SW News: Susanne Wenzel, the prominent leader of the Christian Democrats for Life (CDL), recently urged the German federal government to address the surge in abortion cases across the country. With a growing number of termination of pregnancies being reported, Wenzel has called for immediate action to tackle this pressing issue.
According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, there were 27,600 abortions in Germany during the first three months of 2023, up almost 7 percent over the same time in 2022. This trend, however, contains factors that are "not assessable" based on the available data, and there were 5.4% fewer abortions in 2021 than the previous year.
Women between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for 70 percent of all abortions, with just 4 percent the consequence of a medical necessity or an unwanted pregnancy caused by sex crime. Wenzel ascribed the increase in abortions to both growing living expenses and "the deliberate rejection of family in the greater public debate."
Meanwhile, the CDL leaders urged the Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus of the Greens to begin a "campaign for children and families rather than supporting abortion." Wenzel contends that the government has a "duty to safeguard unborn children," and that this commitment may be accomplished if abortion is removed from the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Furthermore, in order to make having children a pleasurable experience rather than a financial burden, the Christian Democrats for Life have campaigned for increased public investment in families and women's rights.
According to sources, the Green Party in Bavaria, Germany, is planning university rallies in favor of abortion access, while the Christian Democratic CSU in the region is preparing counter-protests.
