Hungary passes law banning LGBT content in school educational materials

SW News: Going one step ahead in protecting the traditional family, the Hungarian parliament has enacted a law banning LBGTI content in school educational materials as well as TV shows for children under 18. This comes as the Viktor Orban government is stepping up its campaign to promote traditional values that are based on the Christian roots of the nation.
The legislation was almost unanimously passed by 157 votes to one. Lawmakers of the ruling Fidesz party ignored a last-minute appeal by rights officials to abandon the plan, which they consider to be an affront to the rights of LGBTI persons.
Although some opposition parliamentarians boycotted the vote, it did not affect its outcome as Fidesz enjoys a healthy majority and the legislation also has the support of the far-right Jobbik party.
As per the new law, only individuals and organizations listed in a government register can undertake sex education classes in schools. This targets outfits with a questionable professional background often established for the representation of specific sexual orientations, said the government spokesperson.
Large organizations and firms will also be prohibited from running advertisements showing solidarity with LGBTI people if they are targeting children under 18. In the same manner, TV shows and films featuring characters who are gay or a rainbow flag would be allowed only after the watershed.
The new law has been slammed by critics who compare it to Russia’s 2013 legislation against homosexual propaganda.
The right-wing government of Orban has been championing the cause of the traditional concept of family and the natural order while underscoring the Christian roots of the nation.
