LGBT identification higher among Generation Z: Gallup study
News Desk
Tuesday, 28 Feb 2023
SW News: A new study published evaluates Americans' self-identification with the LGBT community based on responses from more than 10,700 persons in the United States collected in 2022.
According to the new Gallup data, Generation Z is more likely than older Americans to identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or something "other" than heterosexual, which has resulted in a doubling of the percentage of Americans who identify as LGBT during the last 10 years.
The share of Americans who identify as LGBT reached a record of 7.2% in 2022 after hitting 7.1% in 2021, up from 5.6% in 2020. Generation Z, defined as the group of adults born between 1997 and 2004, has a much higher share of its population identifying as LGBT than its older counterparts.
The information is based on combined polling data from telephone interviews with American adults conducted by Gallup in 2022. Gallup asked respondents in each survey if they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or in some other way.
With 19.7% of adults in Generation Z who were born between 1997 and 2004 and will be between the ages of 18 and 25 in 2022 identifying as LGBT, they are the most likely subgroup to do so. The rate is 3.3% or less for previous generations and 11.2% for millennials.
In addition to the 7% identifying as LGBT, 86% of US adults say they are straight or heterosexual, while 7% chose not to answer the question.
As per statistics from the Williams Institute from 2006, the American cities with the largest LGBT populations are New York City (272,493), Los Angeles (154,270), Chicago (114,449), and San Francisco (94,234). Nonetheless, due to the higher proportion of gay or lesbian people in San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Boston, LGBT residents are considerably more likely to be encountered there.
