Young Catholics defend churches in Poland amidst protests
News Desk
Monday, 26 Oct 2020
SW News: Polish Catholics have taken it upon themselves to defend and protect the Catholic churches as the protests in the country by pro- abortion activists have crossed all limits. Following Thursday’s landmark ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal of Warsaw making abortion on the grounds of fetal abnormalities as unconstitutional, a wave of widespread desecration of Catholic churches and Catholic symbols have been unleashed.
To counter the attacks, Catholics have been standing vigil before entrances, preventing the protestors from entering the churches. The faithful could be seen standing fearlessly, ignoring the profanity shouted at them, some holding their rosaries and praying.
In recent days, scores of Catholic churches have been sprayed with slogans and “bolt” signs. Several crucifixes and statues of St. Pope John Paul II have been desecrated. Protestors have also been interrupting Holy Mass inside churches and chanting vulgar slogans.
A statement released by the President of the Polish Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, stated that public views are to be expressed in a “socially acceptable way, respecting the dignity of every human being.”
The archbishop said, "profanity, violence, abusive inscriptions and disrupting services as well as profanation that have been committed in recent days - although they may help some people to discharge their emotions - are not the right method of operating in a democratic state."
Archbishop Gądecki noted that it is not the Church that constitutes the law in the homeland and that it is not bishops who make decisions on the compliance or non-compliance of statutes with the Polish Constitution. However, he affirmed that the Church can neither stop defending life nor abandon proclaiming that every human being must be protected from conception until natural death.
