SW News: Pope Francis' health is improving after spending a night in the hospital, and he could be discharged in a few days, said a Vatican statement. A medical update on the Holy Father's health stated that he takes antibiotics and responds positively to them.
According to a statement issued by Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni, "Pope Francis spent the afternoon at the Gemelli (Hospital), dedicating himself to rest, prayer and some tasks."
Quoting the medical report from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where the Pope was admitted on Wednesday afternoon, the Vatican said that the pontiff had been diagnosed with viral bronchitis, which calls for administering antibiotic medication delivered by infusion. Bruni added that the doctors diagnosed bronchitis during his scheduled check-ups.
As the pontiff continues treatment, the Catholic Bishops of the U.S. have urged the faithful to pray for a fast recovery of the Holy Father. In a statement issued following the Pope's hospitalization, the chairman of USCCB , Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services, said, "On behalf of my brother bishops, I invite all the faithful to pause, if possible before the Blessed Sacrament, and pray for his speedy recovery. May our dear shepherd and all those who need healing experience the comfort of Christ."
At the same time, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich urged "people of all faiths" to remember the Holy Father in their prayers. Separately, the Christ the Redeemer sanctuary in Rio de Janeiro was the site of a special prayer session presided over by Archbishop Orani Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro.
Meanwhile, throughout all Masses and rosaries, the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal will offer a special prayer for Pope Francis' health. According to a statement issued, the Masses and rosaries are intended "For the Holy Father Pope Francis so that, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick, the Lord may allow him to recover his health and resume the former occupations of the ministry entrusted to him."
