SW News: A Russian missile attack at a railway station killed nearly 22 people and at least 15 people were severely wounded on Wednesday when the nation commemorated its Independence Day.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said before the UN Security Council "I have just received information about a Russian missile strike on a railway station in the Dnipropetrovsk region, right on the carriages at the station in Chaplyne. Four passenger carriages are on fire." In his address, the President also stated that rockets struck Chaplyne station which is about 145km (90 miles) west of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. “Rescuers are working, but, unfortunately, the death toll could increase,” he continued.
The attack took place as the nation observed the 31st anniversary of independence from Soviet rule in 1991. The same day also marked six months since the Russian invasion began.
With the outbreak of the war on February 24, Ukraine has paid a terrifying human price for its resistance against the invaders. According to the country’s estimate, they have lost 9,000 soldiers and millions lost their homes or were forced to seek refuge elsewhere.
The President constantly reminded people to keep fighting and never give up. When Russians invaded the country, the President described it as Ukraine’s rebirth. “A new nation appeared in the world on February 24 at four in the morning. It was not born, but reborn. A nation that did not cry, scream or take fright. One that did not flee. Did not give up. And did not forget,” he said in the speech.
Zelenskyy had warned citizens about “repugnant Russian provocations” on the eve of the holiday. He even informed them to be wary of any air raid warnings.
On Independence day, Ukrainians displayed the destroyed Russian tanks and military equipment on the main street of the capital in place of the usual military parade.
