Armed militants kill 32 people, torch houses and church in Nigeria’s Kaduna state

SW News: The internal security in Nigeria has gone for a toss as there appears to be no end in sight to the bloodbath unleashed by insurgents and armed bandits. Even as the nation is yet to recover from the Pentecost Sunday attack on a church congregation in Ondo state during Holy Mass, there are reports of yet another assault in Kaduna state that has left 32 dead, says Reuters. The attack took place on Sunday, June 5, in the Kajuru Local Government Area.
Speaking to a local television channel, district head of Kufena Titus Dauda said that the militants torched several houses across Kajuru in villages such as Ungwan Gamu, Dogon Noma, Ungwan Sarki and Maikori. Among the structures destroyed is a church.
Local media has quoted a resident as saying that assailants also sprayed bullets on villagers from a chopper. The bandits fired at everyone who tried to flee. Meanwhile, a military source has claimed that government troops engaged the assailants on the ground and air forcing them to retreat.
The horrendous attack was condemned by global rights watchdog Amnesty International. It also sought an end to the frequent attacks in southern Kaduna, which is one of the hotspots of violence in the West African nation. In a statement, the organization said, “We call on the Nigerian authorities to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
While the mortal remains of those who died in the attacks have been buried, most residents of the villages have fled to safer areas.
The Pentecost Sunday attack on St Francis Xavier Church in Owo town of Ondo state in which several people were killed has invited condemnation from several quarters, including ecclesiastical circles. As a gesture of kindness, the Hungarian government has donated 25,000 euros to the diocese of Ondo to provide relief to the families of the victims of the attack.
