SW News: The Christian leaders in Nigeria have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be transparent, fair, and open in their works to obtain people's confidence in the institution. Members of the Christian Association of Niger (CAN) from the Adamawa State put forth the same demand against the backdrop of the upcoming re-election on March 29.

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 26, the representatives of leaders of the largest inter-denominational organization stated that the civilians had lost confidence in the electoral commission after they were accused of fraud during the Presidential elections on February 25.

In the official statement of CAN, Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza of Yola Diocese said, "As we remain prayerful and hopeful that all shall be well, we still pray that INEC will strengthen our confidence in them through their openness, transparency, and fairness."

Urging the commission to make the electoral process more credible, the Bishops have exhorted politicians to involve themselves in fair and decent political activities. The group further urged politicians to restrain themselves from whatever it takes to breach the independence of the electoral commission. They also called the media to stop "institutional pressure" and interfere in the same.

They also called the civilians to be "law-abiding citizens" and not create a stir until the election.
