SW News: The internal security in Nigeria is deteriorating day by day and in the latest incident, unidentified gunmen wreaked havoc in a hospital in Niger state on Tuesday, killing an unspecified number of people. After the attack, the assailants kidnapped at least 10 patients, doctors and nurses. This was revealed by a military source to Reuters.

Reuters quoted the source in the hospital as saying that more than 20 employees were kidnapped by the gun-wielding attackers. It was the general hospital in Lapi local government area that was attacked. Governor of Niger Sani Bello said that two people were killed in the onslaught unleashed by the gunmen at Gulu General Hospital as they came in large numbers. He said several people, including healthcare workers, were taken by the attackers. However, the exact number is not known.

President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors Dr Dare Godiya Ishaya told the news agency that 20 members of the organization have been abducted since January this year. He added that some of them were forced to leave the nation because of the worsening security scenario.

The nation is plagued by armed bandits who kidnap ordinary people, including priests, nuns and male religious, often for huge ransoms. Most of the kidnappings are reported in the northwest part of the country. To make matters worse, the dreaded Islamist outfit Boko Haram is offering money to poor villagers and luring them into the ranks to fight the federal troops. It wants to establish an Islamic government in Nigeria with its own stricter version of Sharia law.

It is reported that Boko Haram militants have taken over many local communities to swell their ranks. Alongside, the local branch of the Islamic State West Africa Province is also carrying out dreaded attacks on Christian villagers, butchering people, and torching churches and houses.
