SW News: In the American state of Ohio, a group of advocacy groups supporting the rights of parents are opposing tooth and nail a proposal to amend the state constitution to allow abortions and gender reassignment surgeries for minors without informing parents.

Spearheading the opposition to the bid to amend the constitution is Protect Women Ohio (PWO), which is an alliance of parents and healthcare experts. It is blaming groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Planned Parenthood for supporting the legislation to bring about a constitutional amendment.

Press Secretary for PWO Amy Natoce said in an interview with Fox News, "This amendment is really putting parental rights on the chopping block, and it's removing all protections for women and the unborn.”

The legislation says, "Every individual has a right to make and carry out one's own reproductive decisions including, but not limited to, decisions on contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one's own pregnancy, miscarriage care, and abortion."

According to Natoce, the language of the bill is unclear as there is no clear reference to adults and nor does it specify parental permission anywhere. This, she said, would lead to overriding laws that mandate the consent of parents. She also added that the legislation’s reference to “reproductive decisions including but not limited to” could include hormone therapy, sterilization or sex reassignment.

According to PWO, Planned Parenthood is announcing that "abortion goes hand-in-hand with advocating for gender-affirming care and birth control." This month, the group supporting parents came out with an advertisement that denounced the role of ACLU and other groups which are gunning for the amendment. The ad says, "It's obvious the reason these groups are in Ohio is to encourage sex change and cut parents out of life-changing decisions. This isn’t he said/she said. They said it themselves.”
