Brasília:
A bill to designate October 7 as the National Day of the Rosary of the Virgin Mary has been approved by Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. The approved bill will be sent to the Senate for its consideration. The author of the bill, Deputy Simone Marquetto (MDB-SP), stated, "This date will unite all Roman Apostolic Catholics in our country, and we will reaffirm our faith."
Around 50 percent of Brazilians identify as Catholics. The Catholic Church has deep roots in the lives of Brazilians since its arrival in the 16th century. Several festivities in Brazil are based on the Catholic faith, and the influence of religion is strongly reflected in the country's architecture and iconography.
Deputy Luiz Gastao (PSD-CE), in his speech at the Chamber, emphasized the cultural significance of the Rosary in the lives of Brazilians. He said, "For centuries, it has been a symbol of faith, hope, and protection for believers, providing spiritual comfort and guidance in times of adversity."
Annually, the Catholic Church observes the month of October as the Rosary month.
