Florida attorney general urges Supreme Court to reject constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion

Florida:
The attorney general of the American state of Florida has urged the supreme court there to reject the proposal to have a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights. Ashley Moody dubbed the initiative as an attempt to “hoodwink voters”.
It was on Tuesday that Moody exhorted the Supreme Court of Florida to reject the attempt. She filed a 39-page brief arguing that the proposal to amend the constitution should be shelved until 2024. She contended that the wording of the ballot summary was misleading.
The attorney general’s brief mentions that the ballot summary belongs to an “overall design to lay ticking time bombs that will enable abortion proponents later to argue that the amendment has a much broader meaning than voters would have thought”.
In October, Moody indicated that she would ask the top court of the state to block the proposed constitutional amendment that is being pushed by the Floridians Protecting Freedom committee. This comes after Governor Ron DeSantis and the House approved curbs on abortion.
The Supreme Court of the state of Florida plays a pivotal role in reviewing polls on bills to make sure that its wording is clear. If the initiatives do not meet legal standards, they can be rejected by the top court.
As per the ballot summary of the proposal to enshrine abortion rights, “No law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”
