SW News: A bill that ends Disney's autonomy and places the media giant under the jurisdiction of a state board was signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday.

“The corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” DeSantis said.

The bill authorizes DeSantis, a Republican, to appoint a five-member board to oversee the government services that the Disney district provides in its theme park properties in Florida. The quasi-government entity also has the authority to raise revenue to pay outstanding debt and cover the cost of services.

The move comes after the Florida governor lashed out at the theme park’s protest of the law restricting sexual orientation discussion in schools.

“Since the 1960s, they’ve enjoyed privileges unlike any company or individual in the state of Florida has ever enjoyed. They had exemptions from laws that everyone else had to follow. They were able to get huge amounts of benefits without paying their fair share of taxes. How do you give one theme park its government and then treat all of the other theme parks differently? So, we believe that that was not a good policy. We believe that being joined at the hip with this one California-based company was not something justifiable or sustainable," DeSantis said at a press meet.

Disney World and Florida's lawmakers have been at odds since Governor DeSantis passed a contentious measure last April. The media house issued a public statement against the law, which prohibited gender and sexuality education for students nine years of age and younger in Florida schools.

The "Don't Say Gay" regulation, which is now in effect, was opposed by those who claimed it would isolate and stigmatize LGBT youngsters, while others who supported it claimed it would shield them from unsuitable content.

Critics slammed Disney World for coming out against the education law, calling it a purveyor of “woke” ideology that injects inappropriate subjects into children’s entertainment.
