SW News: A Christian revival service that began in an American college on Feb. 8 is going on non-stop and as of Feb 16, posts with #AsburyRevival hashtag have clocked 34.5 million views on TikTok. The religious service at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, triggered a spiritual revival with more people joining the praise and worship.
As news of the non-stop revival went viral, people from other countries too began trickling in to join the service. The videos have gained the attention of viewers from all corners of the world. They depict student worshippers singing, praising, and praying to the accompaniment of music and many of them are in tears. This has elicited both praise as well as criticism from viewers around the world.
According to NBC, teachers and students from 22 schools in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee, Indiana and other states travelled to Asbury to join the spiritual marathon. Folks from Canada are also slated to arrive. “This has been an extraordinary time for us,” said Asbury President Kevin Brown during a gathering that took place more than 120 hours after the revival service began.
It was on Feb. 14 that the campus witnessed the largest crowd of more than 3000 worshippers and most of them were from outside the state. Inspired by the Asbury spiritual revival, other educational institutions have started similar services. They include Lee University in Tennessee, Anderson University in Indiana and Ohio Christian University in Columbus.
Although Asbury, which is a Christian liberal arts university, does not profess affiliation to any denomination. Yet its worship style is of the Wesleyan-Arminian type.
Way back in 1970, the campus witnessed another prayer marathon similar to what is happening now. On Feb. 3 that year, a revival service began with the morning prayer in the university chapel and that went on for a solid 144 hours without interruption.
