Wisconsin Republican lawmakers reintroduce bills banning men from women’s sports

SW News: Lawmakers belonging to the Republican Party in the American state of Wisconsin have once again introduced bills that prohibit boys and men facing gender dysphoria from taking part in sports competitions meant for women. They also mandate athletes to be part of teams that match the sex given to them at birth.
According to the bills, schools have to classify sports teams into three categories such as males, females and males and females. Co-authors of the legislation Barbara Dittrich representing Oconomowoc and Dan Knodl of Germantown said that re-introduced bills would rescue women’s sports.
Wisconsin Republican lawmakers re-introduced bills on Wednesday that would ban transgender girls and women from participating in women’s sports and would require student-athletes to play on teams that correspond with the sex assigned to them at birth, unless a team is designated as co-ed.
Co-authors Rep. Barbara Dittrich (R-Oconomowoc) and Sen. Dan Knodl (R-Germantown) said that the bill would “save women’s sports.” They said in a co-sponsorship memo that “These bills would afford three categories of sports competition based on a person’s biological sex with an additional co-ed category allowing for all to participate. This assures inclusion while also protecting the safety and irrefutable biological composition.”
While one bill is applicable to K-12, independent charter and private voucher schools, the other bill applies to the University of Wisconsin System and technical colleges. Back in 2021, lawmakers belonging to the Grand Old Party introduced similar bills. Though they were passed in the Assembly, they failed to make their way through the Senate.
Separately, a federal judge placed an injunction on a Wisconsin school district policy that prevents students from using the bathrooms of members of the opposite sex. The temporary restraining order was issued by Judge Lynn Adelman of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin last week. It prohibits the Mukwonago Area School District from enacting Policy 5514-Student Privacy in Restrooms and Locker Rooms. The order was based on a lawsuit filed by the mother of an 11-year-old boy who is experiencing gender dysphoria.
