SW News: The Polish branch of Caritas Internationalis is gearing up to provide warm food and blankets to homeless people in the capital city, Warsaw. This ‘warm’ initiative takes place every fall with the cooperation of city police.

Since 2015, Caritas Poland has been undertaking the campaign, "A little warmth for the homeless", by handing over blankets, warm clothes, thermos flasks and hot meals to the Municipal Police, who in turn hand them over to homeless people living on the streets and in night shelters. Hot meals are usually prepared in the kitchens operated by Caritas Poland.

The coordinator of the campaign, Janusz Sukiennik told a Polish Catholic website that they have ample stocks of canned food, blankets, and woollen socks for the homeless in the city. He said that with the financial support of Warsaw residents, they will also buy shoes for them.

Apart from providing food and other necessities, Caritas volunteers have requested homeless people to make use of shelters, adoption programs, and other means of support offered by the government and Catholic Church.

According to Aldona Machnowska-Góra, the deputy mayor of Warsaw, there are 1,500 people in various houses for the homeless. Grzegorz Staniszewski, who is in charge of the Department of Prevention and Planning of the City Guard of the Capital City of Warsaw, said that the campaign will be focusing on certain parts of the country where there are no shelters or eateries. Last year, the police handed over 3,000 liters of hot soup to homeless people apart from 150 blankets, 800 pairs of woollen socks with the assistance of the Polish Caritas.
