SW News: The Spanish capital Madrid witnessed thousands of believers and pro-life supporters gathering on the streets on Sunday, June 26, to protest against the repressive abortion and euthanasia laws. More than 200 pro-life associations attended the Defense of Life and Truth march in which protesters rallied from the Glorieta de Bilbao roundabout to Plaza de Colon. The demonstration took place under the slogan “We risk our lives! Enough of laws against truth and human nature!"

On the day of the march, Jaime Mayor Oreja, a member of NEOS, one of the organizers of the event, said “the repeal of abortion in the United States shows us that the debate on the culture of life is far from closed. We will be more present, united, and active than ever.”

He said that it was essential to mobilize and defend the “Christian foundations of the society in the face of relentless social order.” He further clarified that they had not assembled in a debate of the past but to become aware and prepare for the debate of the future.

This march happened two days after the US Supreme Court repealed the Roe v Wade judgment that legalized abortion in 1973. Joseph Miro, the coordinator of the Assembly of Associations for Life, Freedom and Dignity, said that this parade served to build a society of life and a new future where they could join forces with the purpose of acting together.

Meanwhile, Nayeli Rodriquez, National coordinator of the 40 Days for Life campaign for Spain, warned that in this European country more than 2.5 million abortions were performed since the Abortion Law came into force in 1985.

Approximately 61.3 per cent of the Spanish citizens identify themselves as Catholic, which is over 32 million residents.
