SW News: New York’s archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan paid a visit to the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on May 31 where a hate crime had occurred on May 17. The prelate also presided over a Divine Liturgy at the parish.
On Tuesday evening, Cardinal Dolan joined the parishioners in singing the prayers of the Rosary to express solidarity. According to Newsbreak, the rosary used by Cardinal Dolan was given to him during a recent visit to Ukraine.
In a Facebook post, the archbishop shared photos of his visit to the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and described vandalism that took place there as “an act of hate.” He also urged all to remember that the Lord is with us in tough times, “just as Mary did.”
According to Novonite, one or more malefactors entered the churchyard two weeks ago under the cover of darkness and committed vandalism by smashing and decapitating the statues of two of the three shepherd children in the Grotto of Our Lady of Fatima. The beheaded statues of the two little girls are beyond repair and will need to be replaced.
As the gate leading to the garden was closed, the culprit had climbed over the 10 ft fence even though it had barbed wire on it.
Regarding the recent theft of a $2 million tabernacle from Brooklyn’s St Augustine church, Cardinal Dolan said it was most likely a case of theft. But this incident, he believes, was a hate crime.
To the congregation of Our Lady of Sorrows, the archbishop shared this message: “Goodness, truth and beauty will have the last word, not evil and cruelty and ugliness and division.”
