SW News: The Catholic Church in San Francisco has scored a partial victory in its campaign to increase the number of people allowed to attend Holy Mass. Up until this week, the city’s civic authorities were imposing COVID-19 restriction that permitted only 50 people to gather for outdoor worship, while only one person at time was allowed to go inside a church. Now the number allowed to worship indoors is to be increased to 25% of church capacity. That's up to a limit of 100 people. Meanwhile, the number who can worship outdoors has been quadrupled to 200 people. That change in policy follows a sternly worded letter from the U.S. Department of Justice to San Francisco’s Mayor, London Breed. It accused Mayor Breed of breaching America’s constitutional right to religious freedom by, “transforming a house of worship arbitrarily into a place for solitary confinement.” The Archbishop of San Francisco, the Most Reverend Salvatore Cordileone, was quick to thank Mayor Breed for her change of heart but he also asked her to reconsider the 100-person cap on the number of worshippers allowed inside a church. Archbishop Cordileone noted that a similar limit was not being imposed upon comparable secular activities. He also noted that it didn’t seem to recognize that some church buildings were bigger than the others.
