SW News: The final two episodes of season three of the globally-acclaimed Bible-based TV series “The Chosen” will debut in US theaters on February 2 and 3. As soon as it was announced, fans of the series logged into the ticketing website Fathom Events on Sunday to buy tickets that resulted in the site crashing because of the unprecedented traffic.
According to director and co-writer of “The Chosen” Dallas Jenkins, episodes 7 and 8 would be screened at select movie halls across the United States. He said the theater release was decided after fans demanded it along with movie halls, adding that the scope of the story also merits a theater release. “Because of the success of the Christmas special last year, theaters are saying, 'We want The Chosen in our theater,'” Jenkins said.
Ever since the kick-off of season three, this will be the third time the series is going to be released in theaters. It was in November that the first two episodes of “The Chosen” were released and it was a runaway hit leading to the series finding a place in the top 3 slot at the box office opening weekend fetching $14,612,089.
According to Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events, “The success of The Chosen Season 3: Episodes 1 & 2 is the perfect example of how innovative the event cinema business has become and how hungry audiences are for faith-based content.”
"Additionally, the robust partnership that we've developed with Angel Studios and The Chosen team really works – not only for Fathom Events and our exhibition partners but for fans everywhere, including several international territories who want to see this content on the big screen and as a community."
The final episodes will depict the multiplication of loaves by Jesus to feed about 5,000 people and it has to be shown on the big screen, said Jenkins.
According to CBN News, the series is the largest crowd-funded endeavor related to the media and has turned into an international phenomenon. So far, there have been 400 million views of the initial two seasons of “The Chosen”.
