SW News: The love of Mexicans for Our Lady of Guadalupe is phenomenal. Sacred pictures and images depicting the Holy Virgin can be seen everywhere and believers take pride in displaying them in public gatherings and sports arenas are no exception. During a recent epoch-creating soccer tournament in Guadalajara, one of the players of the winning team created a sensation by proudly displaying a statue of the Virgin during the photoshoot with the trophy.
On December 12, the feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, soccer team Atlas won the prestigious Liga MX title after seven decades by trouncing Club Leon 4-3. Sensing a divine intervention in the sensational win on the feast of the patroness of the nation, defender Anderson Santamaria held aloft a statue of Our Lady in such a manner that it appeared above the trophy as they posed for the shutterbugs in the Estadio Jalisco. Within no time, the picture of the team with the sacred image went viral on social media. It is also reported that the team later attended a thanksgiving Mass expressing gratitude to the Almighty for their stellar achievement.
It was the smart moves by Atlas goalkeeper Carrilo Vargas and striker Julio Furch in the evening shootout that led the club to victory. The last time Atlas bagged the Liga MX trophy was in 1951. All these decades, the team was branded as unlucky and lacking the talent to lock horns with other soccer titans. Sports experts view this victory as a grand, much-awaited comeback of Atlas.
