SW News: The Archdiocese of San Francisco prayed for Hong Kong, especially Cardinal Joseph Zen and pro-democracy businessman Jimmy Lai during their Eucharistic adoration and benediction which was held on Monday, April 3.
The adoration was presided over by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone at St. Anne of the Sunset Church on 850 Judah Street in San Francisco. The Holy Week Eucharistic adoration began at 6.30 pm PDT was open to all.
The National Security Law (NSL) which was introduced in 2020 in Hong Kong, has made it easier to prosecute protesters and reduced the city's autonomy.
Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong Cardinal Zen, 91, who has been an outspoken opponent of this law, was arrested in May last year on a charge of "colluding with foreign forces" by Hong Kong’s national security police. Following questioning, he was released.
In November 2022, the cardinal and five others were each fined HK$4,000 ($510) for arranging funds for pro-democracy protests.
Lai, is the founder of Apple Daily, a now-defunct tabloid in Hong Kong that was a leading voice of support for the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. Lai has been serving a jail sentence for "unlawful assembly".
