SW News: A mega Hollywood movie distributor has clinched the rights to distribute the hit Bible-based series “The Chosen” around the world. The director and producer of the series based on the lives of Jesus and his disciples Dallas Jenkins said on Monday, May 22, that Lionsgate has bagged the distribution rights to all seasons. This movie distributor also produced the renowned “Jesus Revolution”.

The director of “The Chosen” has said that he wants the series to be taken to the next level with Lionsgate acquiring the overseas distribution rights and planning going on to make the Bible series available in 600 languages around the globe. He said: “Lionsgate is perfect for us. They’re strong and experienced in the areas we’re not, but they also understand what’s unique about us and will protect that. We’ll continue to do what we do best unabated, and they’ll expand our efforts with their tremendous distribution team.”

Jim Packer, the president of Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution, said that Jesus is an important historical figure while hailing the acquisition of global distribution rights. “The more I learned about ‘The Chosen’, the more I wanted to ensure that it is on the best platforms across the globe. It’s no surprise that an artfully crafted story about such an important historical figure, unlike anything done before, would be in great demand,” he quipped.

“The multi-season approach has allowed ‘The Chosen’ to consistently build its audience and generate a unique level of engagement. We’re excited by the opportunity to elevate this incredible property to the next level of worldwide recognition and popularity.”

It was in 2019 that the series began as the largest crowdfunded project in the history of mass media. Today, it has become a global sensation as it has been viewed by 94 million people in 62 languages. Its runaway success has gained close to 6.5 million followers on social media and its release in movie halls has raked in 35 million USD.

Jenkins has more than 20 years of experience in the film industry and he was noticed with the release of “The Shepherd”, a short movie on the birth of Jesus Christ through the eyes of a shepherd who is physically challenged. It was shot on a farm in the USA's Illinois.

There have been three seasons of “The Chosen” so far and the fourth is right now under production. It also features in the five most searched shows on Roku. This catapulted actor Jonathan Roumie, who essays the role of Jesus in the series, and Jenkins to global fame.

Twice, Roumie was invited for a private audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican regarding his role as Jesus.
